Abstract Discusses some of the key concepts involved in connectionist or neural-network modeling of the nervous system, including nonlinear systems, autoassociators, self-organization, and chaos theory. Several important nonlinear properties of the behavior of connectionist networks (such as deterministic chaos, hysteresis, and sudden jumps) are also described.
