Abstract Two small classes of high‐energy sources, the Anomalous X‐ray Pulsars and the Soft Gamma‐ray Repeaters, have properties that are well explained by the “magnetar” model, postulating the existence of isolated neutron stars with supercritical magnetic fields (B∼1014–1015 G). Thanks to Simbol‐X, it shall be possible to study with unprecedented detail different aspects of the high‐energy properties from these sources, both for what concerns their persistent emission as well as for their bursts and flares.
