Identity

Individual and collective identities are shaped by geopolitics, while identities also inform geopolitical representations and practices. This entry discusses the paradoxical meaning of ‘identity’ (stressing both uniqueness and sameness) and the way territories and identities are co-constituted through processes of spatial socialization and social spatialization. It then foregrounds the relation between national identities and geopolitical visions before turning to other competing or complementary territorial identities and to other identities invoked in geopolitical representations such as linguistic, religious, gender, and sexual identities.
