Abstract For a long time cats were only seen as a predator to hunt rodents. Its role changed during the 19th C. as they were allowed to live with the Bourgeoisie in their city mansions. They became a full member of family life. Wealthy citizens collected paintings with cats. Dutch animal painter Henriette Ronner-Knip became extremely successfull with her art works on cat life.
