Similarities and differences in the use of delimiting temporal conjunctions in the modern Slavic languages.
Virtually all Slavic languages have "delimiting" temporal conjunctions which display an interesting kind of polysemy. They express temporal relations that in non-Slavic languages usually must be translated by various conjunctions. E.g. Russian poka (ne) regularly corresponds to English while, as long as, till/until and before. In this paper the use of these conjunctions in all 13 modern Slavic literary languages is compared. The analysis is based on material from the author’s parallel corpus.
It appears that along with certain types of use which are common for practically all these languages there are also several uses that occur only in limited parts of them. With various types of use the delimiting con-junction of a certain language (or group of languages) competes with one or more other conjunctions, sometimes with very subtle distinctions. In a number of cases the situation is as yet insufficiently clear and asks for further investigations.
