Abstract This chapter examines the geological development of the Orinoco and Amazon River basins. It analyzes the evolution of aquatic Amazonian ecosystems from the Late Cretaceous to the Quaternary period and provides and considers the potential impacts on the development of modern Amazonian fish faunas. It provides paleogeographic reconstructions of northern South America from the Oligocene to the Late Miocene based on the geological and paleontological records.
