| Abstract |
This chapter explores the application of the 15-minute city (15mC) model in addressing the mobility and accessibility needs of older adults, with a focus on the city of Milan. The 15mC concept, which advocates for proximity-based urban planning, aims to enhance the quality of life by ensuring essential services are within a 15-minute walk or bike ride. This chapter investigates the urban policies and actions taken by the Municipality of Milan to implement the 15mC model, emphasising the benefits and limitations for senior citizens. Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and isochrone mapping, the walkability and service accessibility in 88 neighbourhoods are analysed, providing insights into how the 15mC can be adapted to meet the needs of an ageing society. The findings highlight the importance of tailoring urban interventions to the unique requirements of different demographics, particularly seniors, to create more inclusive, age-friendly cities.
