Abstract
Why does the ideology of growth, productivity and competition (hereafter ‘growthism’) have its grip on so many of us?
How are we socialized into it and what are its psychological costs?
What are the possible dimensions of non-alienated experience?
What could the degrowth movement propose to counteract these problems?

These are some of the questions that guided the Embodying Degrowth thematic stream that our collective organized at the 8th International Degrowth Conference ‘Caring Communities for Radical Change’.

We offer a contribution to the ongoing endeavour of exploring them.
