Abstract
The stated lowering of the surface in the valley of the Treene is substantial. According to the height
of the peat located on slopes, a decline of at least 150 cm is computed. A considerable part of the total
drop took place before the drainage operation carried out around the year 1924. It cannot be ruled out
that the damming-up of the Treene in the year 1570 played a major role in the lowering of the surface
(Borger 1998; cf. the contribution by G. J. Borger in this volume). However, even prior to this, drainage
of the bogs had on all accounts been undertaken by man to a limited extent.
