Abstract This article examines the self-consciousness of Ovid’s Metamorphoses as a work of poetry. After tracing the practice of writing about poetry in poetry from the Hellenistic to the Augustan age, and placing the Metamorphoses in the career of the elegiac poet Ovid, I will eventually discuss a few episodes (prologue, Arachne, Orpheus, and Pygmalion) to show what Ovid’s "elegiac epic" has to say about itself.
