| Abstract |
City poets have been known in the southern Low Countries from the late Middle Ages onwards. Recent studies view their function in terms of the role the rhetoricians played in the urban culture. There are, however, reasons to assume that well before the rhetoricians there had been poets that fulfilled a similar role. This is demonstrated by an assessment of existing as well as new biographical data concerning the early fifteenth century Ghent poet Everaert Taybaert.
