| Abstract |
Transgender is a heterogeneous sociocultural category of persons whose gender identification transgresses, in one way or another, the gender norms extant in the society of which they are part. In its most encompassing sense, the term can be applied to a broad variety of manifestations that differ from one another in terms of their practices and desires, their epistemological construction, and their relationship to the mainstream. The diversity of the category is counterbalanced by the fact that some manifestations can easily transform into others, which warrants an approach focused on comparing different transgender subjectivities across and within societies.
