Abstract Franciscan monk Luca Pacioli was an important mathematician around 1500; he taught at several Italian universities and published a.o. the Summa de Arithmetica, Geometria, Proportioni et Proportionalità (1494) and the Divina Proportione (Ms. 1498, ed. pr. 1509), the first book in history devoted to the golden section.
