Abstract Did the Parlement de Paris really put an end to the performance of mystery plays in France in 1548? Was its famous arrêt, at the request of the actors, really effective? Throughout the sixteenth century, the question of the staging of biblical subject matter remained high on the agenda. Provincial regulations did not necessarily follow those of Paris, and certainly not straightaway. Even in Paris, the precise status of the famous arrêt is not totally clear, as the question continued to be debated all through the sixteenth century.
