Les termes utilisés pour les réalités en marge de la grande histoire théâtrale ne sont pas innocents, mais ils cachent une idéologie – et il est difficile de cerner l’objet historique précis du théâtre en province. Y a-t-il une permanence des formes ? Deux tendances majeures sont toutefois à observer : les traditions locales et sédentaires qui s’opposent à l’avènement d’un théâtre ambulant ou nomade, où il faut notamment une mise au point sur l’histoire des galants ou enfants sans souci.

The terms we use for practices in the margin of great theatre history are never totally innocent: they hide an ideology –and it is difficult to circumscribe the historical object of provincial theatre. Is there a certain permanence of forms? Two major tendencies can be observed: local and sedentary traditions on the one hand, and the development of an itinerant theatre on the other, and there, it is especially important to get things right when we are speaking of galants or enfants sans souci.
