Abstract In M.J. Langevveld’s 1934 thesis Taal en denken (Language and thought) traditional grammar is severely criticized, but, nevertheless, its categories are largely vindicated. The philosopher H.J. Pos was Langeveld’s general mentor. Pos introduced him to phenomenology, which remained Langeveld’s guiding philosophy during his later carrier as an internationally renowned educationist. This contribution addresses the question whether Pos, who was experienced as a linguist, also influenced Langeveld’s grammatical ideas.
