Abstract An extensive description of the only Book of the Dead papyrus in the Museum (APM 9223), dated 1st century AD, is preceded by a general introduction to this book and its predecessors, the Piramid and Coffin Texts. The several ways in which the Book of
the Dead was included in a tomb’s inventory are mentioned. The spells (including only 17 of the total of almost 200) and the illustrations are treated regarding context and meaning, with emphasis on specific themes like the Negative Confession, the Ritual of the Opening of the Mouth and the significance of the concepts of Ka and Ba.
