| Abstract |
The verbs "doen" and "делать": twins or distant relatives?
In this paper, two semantically broad verbs, Dutch "doen" 'to do' and its Russian equivalent "delat'", are contrasted on the basis of data obtained from monolingual dictionaries and Dutch-Russian bilingual text corpora. The verbs show considerable overlap in meaning in that they both carry the general meaning 'to act'. This allows them to be used as translational equivalents in appropriate contexts. In addition, "delat'" lays emphasis on the notion of 'constructing' and the concrete results that emanate from this, whereas "doen" has undergone a certain degree of grammaticalization, as is evident from its various uses, such as "placement-into", anaphoric and causative use, and its function as topicalization marker. |
