Reconceptualising activism space in the contemporary Global South

This edited volume reconceptualises ‘activism space’ in the contemporary Global South as a dynamic, adaptive and multi-sited formation shaped by colonial legacies, authoritarian repression and epistemic inequality. It critiques Eurocentric frameworks that overlook the situated logics and spatial innovations of resistance emerging under volatile political conditions. Highlighting movements across seven countries (India, South Africa, Palestine, Iran, Kenya, Chile and Pakistan), this volume reveals how marginalised groups mobilise decolonial, emotional and transnational strategies–blending cultural scripts, digital platforms and everyday performances–to challenge hegemonic power. These contributions illuminate decentralised, flexible and often fragmented forms of digital and hybrid activism, demanding more nuanced perspectives on contemporary protest. Emphasising both repression and resilience, this collection advances a fluid, relational understanding of activism grounded in Southern epistemologies and spatial politics that traverse South–South and South–North trajectories.
