In recent years, in the wake of protests by climate activists targeting artworks, many museums worldwide are seeking to redefine their role in an era of global warming. While current museological discourse primarily focuses on developing sustainable strategies and values, this article takes a historical perspective to explore how museums have mediated and represented nature. The article examines a turning point, in which museums fundamentally shifted their stance on the interplay between art and the environment. I argue that during the late 1960s and early 1970s, art institutions played a crucial role in fostering multidisciplinary approaches and practices that have since become integral to contemporary ecological discourse.
