Abstract
This article examines the agitation activities of the Danish Social Democratic Party in the 1930s, focusing on its Information- and Propaganda Institution, HIPA. This is done by combining a media historical approach with an empirical analysis of a wide and varied source material from the archive of HIPA. The aim is to clarify the scope and nature of the social democratic agitation in a time of economic crisis and the rise of new anti-democratic movements. The study shows that the Danish Social Democrats developed a professional propaganda apparatus to fight Nazi and Communist movements and to promote the party itself. The extent of the perceived threat as well as the widespread agitation are highly remarkable. Altogether, the article contributes to nuanced knowledge of the use of propaganda in the political struggle of the interwar period.
