Abstract Hypoglycaemia and impaired awareness of hypoglycaemia are common, increase the risk of severe hypoglycaemia and have a major impact on patients’ perceived health and well-being. This thesis focuses on the prevalence of impaired awareness of hypoglycaemia in type 1 diabetes and in insulin-treated type 2 diabetes and attempts to provide further insight into the pathophysiology of hypoglycaemia. Potential methods of monitoring glycaemia are assessed and the potential of new drug therapies (DDP-4 inhibitors) to influence counterregulation to hypoglycaemia is studied.
