Abstract
The management fresh water supply is one of the parameters for measuring hygiene and sanitary practices of a medieval city. For the settlements of the North Adriatic lagoon, first and foremost the city of Venice, this issue is part of the broader one of control over the unstable balance between fresh and brackish water. This paper aims to contribute to the critical analysis regarding the origin and spread of the "Venetian well", through the review of the archaeological documentation of recent years and the presentation of excavation data (still unpublished), collected during recent research at the lagoon site of Jesolo. The analysis, including not only at the historical center of Venice, but also at the neighboring settlements and islands, makes it possible to trace the prodromes of the highly efficient solutions reached in the final centuries of the Middle Ages for the retrieval and storage of drinking water in the lagoon environment.
