| Abstract | The chapter analyzes the composition and writing history of Athar ("Traces", "Monuments"), a compilation of Muslim biographies by Rizaeddin Fakhreddinov (d. 1936), famous Tatar publicist and Soviet Mufti under Stalin. The argument is that pious biographies from all over Russia are brought together in the form of a network that comprises the Tatar (Muslim) nation. A second focus is on the entries on the fate of Islamic scholars from the 1920s and 1930s, that is, how Fakhreddinov preserved the memory of his colleagues who were killed or exiled under Stalin - and how he expressed his despair. |
