Vélocemen, hiverneurs et Algériens Cyclisme et socialibilité sportive en Algérie (1885-1914)

Cet article porte sur l’histoire sociale et culturelle de l’introduction et du développement du cyclisme en Algérie, des années 1880 à 1914. Avec la boxe et le football, le cyclisme compte parmi les sports les plus populaires. Le vélo est considéré comme le vecteur d’une culture sportive internationale qui dépasse le cadre Métropole-Algérie. Sa pratique est multifonctionnelle et représente un espace de rencontres variées. En Algérie française, elle constitue à la fois un espace de compétition et de confrontation, de domination et d’émancipation, et un lieu d’échanges, au niveau local, régional et international.

This article examines the social and cultural history of the introduction and development of cycling in colonial Algeria from the 1880s to 1914. Along with boxing and football, cycling was one of the most popular sports in French Algeria. The sport was seen as an emblem of an international sports culture whose scope went well beyond the context of metropolitan-colonial relations. The practice of cycling was multifunctional and represented an opportunity for diverse encounters. In colonial Algeria, cycling embodied competition and opposition, domination, and emancipation; it was a forum for exchange at the local, regional, and international levels.
