Abstract Immanuel Wallerstein’s world-systems theory has become one of the most discussed contributions to the social sciences of the past century. The present chapter describes Wallerstein’s concepts of capitalism, the bourgeoisie, the proletariat, class struggle and immizeration, and discusses some fundamental objections to the theory that have been put forward by critics over the years.
