| Abstract | This paper studies linguistic expressions of non-straightforwardness, such as 'sort of' and 'whatshisname' and proposes an analysis within the framework of Functional Discourse Grammar. It is shown that the presence of an Interpersonal Level within this model as well as the various layers that make up this level provide the means to give a systematic account of the distribution and behaviour of these elements in a wide variety of languages. |
