Abstract Slavery in Africa is commonly associated with the distant past: images of maritime slavery in the Gold Coast, Biafra, Angola and Zanzibar together with the horrors of the 'Middle Passage' to the Americas. However, widespread evidence of human trafficking, wartime enslavement and other forms of bondage still exists in Africa today. The essays in this volume shed light on these issues by placing historical events in context with contemporary practices of slavery. It also seeks to provide possible solutions to the problem.
