| Abstract |
Early detection of child sexual abuse is crucial, yet professionals often lack reliable tools for confirmation, relying heavily on child disclosures, which can be influenced by previous controversial investigative methods. This thesis discusses the development and value of the Sexual Knowledge Picture Instrument (SKPI), a child-friendly tool aimed at facilitating conversations about sexual abuse. Research has shown that abused children often demonstrate less age-appropriate sexual knowledge than their non-abused peers and exhibit more reserved non-verbal behaviours. This raises questions about how non-verbal cues might aid in the disclosure of abuse. The research objectives include validating the SKPI as a diagnostic tool for CSA among children aged 3-9. A modified version of the SKPI was created, along with a semi-structured interview manual and scoring lists for verbal and non-verbal reactions. A protocol was developed for a validation study assessing the reliability and diagnostic accuracy of the SKPI. The importance of standardizing methods to evaluate non-verbal signals during investigations is emphasized, indicating a critical need for validated instruments in the assessment of CSA. Further research is recommended to improve the SKPI's effectiveness and ensure the safety and well-being of potential victims.
