Abstract
When the Colombian government reached a peace agreement with the FARC guerrilla organization in 2016 to finally end the decades-long internal conflict that had claimed numerous civilian casualties, the parties decided to mark the event with a memorial created from the melted weapons of FARC in the Colombian capital. The memorial and exhibition space Fragmentos – Espacio de Arte y Memoria opened in downtown Bogota in 2018, based on Doris Salcedo’s concept. The artist intended to create a space that allows for discussions on traumas and dialogues between victims and perpetrators on opposite sides. Salcedo transformed the space built around the ruins of a 17th century colonial dwelling into an unusual memorial: she collaborated with female victims of sexual violence to create its floor out of the melted weapons of former FARC members. But while Fragmentos aims at promoting universal reconciliation in Colombia and houses exhibitions that address various aspects of the conflict, it remains divisive because it focuses on a single victim group, the female victims of sexual violence.
