| Abstract |
This study evaluates the journalist-algorithm interaction and asks whether these AI-tools in the form of algorithms are changing, or rather reinventing, the journalistic institution. In recent years, digitalization has dramatically changed news editors. Journalists, for example, increasingly use tools to gather, write, verify, and disseminate news. These tools, in the form of algorithms, are latent in the news ecosystem and take the form of, for example, recommender systems (labelling what is newsworthy), speech-to-text generators (helping to write articles) or metrics systems (measuring reading behavior through audience analysis). These algorithms increasingly determine how information spreads within news organizations and may result in the automation of certain subtasks of journalists. This study evaluates the different levels of automation in the newsroom, the framing of AI and automation, and the interaction and the amount of trust journalists place in these algorithms in newsrooms in Belgium, the UK, the US, and Germany. |
