Abstract Van der Bruggen’s book is a well-researched and carefully documented contribution to Dutch Jewish historiography. It demonstrates that Jewish life in the periphery often followed a different trajectory from that of the Amsterdam centre. Moreover, it provides a valuable local perspective on the broader debate concerning Catholic anti-Judaism and antisemitism.
