Abstract Peristeria in Messenia is the site of an important Middle Helladic and early Mycenaean settlement, which probably served as the seat of a local ruler. Three early Mycenaean tholos tombs attest to the importance of the site. Peristeria was eclipsed by the nearby centre at Mouriathada in the thirteenth century BCE, possibly as the result of a (Pylian) palatial intervention in the area. It might be identified with a-te-re-wi-ja on various tablets from Pylos.
