The Judgment of the Dead was an elaborate judicial process for the ancient Egyptians. The first court procedure was the Negative Confession where the deceased was obliged to deny 42 specific transgressions in order to pass. There are indications that this was a real procedure and not just a virtual one. In the second test the Scales of Justice played
an important role. The heart of the deceased was weighed against the Feather of Truth and both had to be in balance. If the deceased passed these judgments unequivocally, he was free to continue to the hereafter. Kings followed a different routine, however.
