Abstract In recent years, foreign language teaching and learning has increasingly been shaped by
processes of internationalisation. What are the key advantages and challenges of international
classrooms
for students and lecturers? The current article addresses this question through an
analysis of recent developments in teaching and learning German as a foreign language at the
University of Amsterdam. It describes how student cohorts have shifted from Dutch-only classes to international classrooms and analyses the specific conditions that are sparked by thisdevelopment.
