| Abstract |
Earlier drafts of most of the contributions to this special issue were presented at a conference organised at the European University Institute as part of the research programme of the Network of Excellence CONNEX (‘Connecting Excellence on European Governance’), funded by the European Union as a core part of the Sixth Framework Programme of Research. The problem of accountability in contemporary democracies and at the European level has been one of the major themes developed within the CONNEX research programme.
