| Abstract |
This working paper is a sequel to the working paper (2006-08) in which we addressed the question of the relation between process management and organisational structure. In our first working paper we presented a typology of integrative solutions for process management in relation to the situational factors. This working paper is the second step of our research. It includes an empirical study towards the use of coordination mechanisms for process management and the situational factors of a number of Hospitals and the Police Force in the Netherlands. We found in these organisations a variety of the coordination mechanisms included in the typology. This study suggests that although process management is a 'hot' topic in both sectors, the implementation is in its first stages and still rife with challenges. The lack of adequate process information, especially, is an obstacle. Also in this working paper is suggested that the implementation approach, which in the researched hospitals and police departments has in most cases been top down and technically oriented, may have caused problems with understanding the principles of process orientated organising and the acceptation by the employees.
