Abstract
Regarding Hubert van Herreweghen’s oeuvre, the view is usually held that initially the poet wrote in a traditional, formally regular style, while adopting more experimental ways of expression only after 1980. In this article, the distinction between the early and the later periods is blurred, suggesting that already in the fifties Van Herreweghen’s poetry may have had some connection with the ‘tiny beautiful revolution’ proclaimed by the Dutch experimentalist Lucebert. Three sources of inspiration are dealt with: literary tradition; the Roman Catholic way of life; and the scenery of Brabant’s cultivated landscape. The theme of erotics is also discussed. Finally, it is proposed that an ecocritical approach of this body of poetry may be fruitful.
