Abstract

In this article we focus on the importance of the experienced learning climate in organizations for the employability of individual employees of all ages. First, a definition and operationalization of the multi-dimensional concept of employability within the organizational context was sought for. We came to the following definition of employability: “the continuous fulfillment, acquisition, and/ or creation of work through the optimal use of competences”. In this operationalization, professional expertise is complemented with four dimensions of a more generic nature. A domain-independent measurement instrument, consisting of a supervisor and employee version, was developed and validated. Secondly, we examined whether employability can be predicted by the experienced learning climate. In addition to calendar age, various conceptualizations of age were included into the model (career and life phase). These studies show that we have indeed developed a reliable and valid instrument that can be applied across various professions and sectors. In addition, the experienced learning climate is important for employability. The experienced learning climate decreases with calendar age, but this effect disappears when career and life phases are included in the analysis. Organizations can use the tools that we developed to promote the sustainable employability of their employees.
