Abstract Scandalous farces are part of the theatrical history of fifteenth- and sixteenth-century France. Why farces were or could be scandalous, and what exactly is meant by that, is quite another question - and it is exactly that question that this article addresses: what is scandalous, why, how ? Three central elements are to be distinguished : naming and shaming in farces, addressing religious matters, and unforeseen consequences of performance, implying matters of public order.
