Abstract
This article explores the cultural meaning of the transgender body in the Chilean film Una mujer fantástica from a Queer Studies perspective. Although not an essay about theory, this work discusses critical issues in the film under the light of concepts elaborated by the authors Jack Halberstam (Skin Shows) and Sara Ahmed. First, I briefly introduce the implications of queer theory and the transgender phenomena, from an interdisciplinary perspective. Then, the notions of the body proposed by Halberstam provide a reference for the cultural construction of the hybrid or monstrous body, in this specific case, linked to the transgender body. Finally, Ahmed’s critical speculation regarding the political implications of being happy reminds us how certain bodies have been systematically excluded from the scripts of happiness.
