Petrie en het Allard Pierson Museum

The museum holds a significant number of objects which came directly to its predecessor, the former Museum Scheurleer in The Hague, from excavations in Egypt in the 1920’s by the pioneer Egyptologist Flinders Petrie. He used to finance his work with contributions by museums all over the world, in exchange for which these received a proportionate number of objects. At that time, a considerable part of these finds was still allowed out of the country.
Gradually, with the rise of nationalism in Egypt and in the wake of its decolonization, this became less and less; now, all excavated objects must remain in the country. Backgrounds and details are given on Petrie, Scheurleer and the objects in question.
