Bevolkingseconomie gaat over het leven van het individu. Kwesties als: de optimale leeftijd om kinderen te krijgen, carrièreplanning, het huwelijk en de scheiding zijn vragen waar elk individu over moet beslissen. Al deze besluiten worden beïnvloed door de economische situatie, maar hebben ook economische gevolgen. Daarom draagt de economie van de familie bij aan zowel op microniveau van het individu die besluiten moeten nemen, als op het macroniveau, waar overheden bijvoorbeeld zich zorgen maken over het verouderen van de bevolking. Omdat de institutionele regelingen verschillend zijn van land tot land, kan een vergelijking tussen provincies in één land de verschillen in gedrag verklaren.

All these private decisions are both influenced by the economic situation and have economic consequences. Therefore economics of the family contributes both on the micro level for individuals making decisions and on the macro level for governments worrying for example about aging of the population.
