Abstract
Applying mobility analysis, through field research and in-depth interviews, this study investigates the experience of students and their mothers, who cross border everyday between Shenzhen and Hong Kong. This study particularly focuses on the perspectives and practices of mothers towards their children's educational mobility. The study finds that mothering in this cross-border situation is affected by both the shortage of time and the expansion of space between two cities. The time-intensive feature of mothering is illustrated in the
length of all day standby, the highly rapid rhythm and the irreconcilable time conflict. The space-intensive feature of mothering is mainly reflected in the emotional labor under spatial division, the physical and mental fatigue under spatial occupation, and the cognitive tension under spatial competition. Cross-border mothers face dual constraints of natural space and social space. Meanwhile, they demonstrate their subjectivity and agency by four major strategies: adjusting their cognition and emotion, seeking surrogated motherhood, embedding motherhood with livelihood, and compressing space for more time.
