Abstract Argumentation schemes have significantly impacted AI and Law, providing
a basis for annotating argument structures in large corpora and generating
quantitative data for argument mining. This, in turn, can greatly benefit legal practice in areas such as litigation and consistent adjudication. This paper argues that using Wagemans’ argument classification framework of the Periodic Table of Arguments (PTA) [1] offers a promising alternative to Walton’s classification of argument schemes [2] for corpus annotation and argument mining in AI and Law.
