Abstract The aim of this contribution is to show how so-called morphological processes such as blending and clipping can be described as rule governed processes of word formation. For the explanation of these processes Zabrocki's theory of diacrisis (1962) turns out to be useful. The examples are mostly taken from English. A few have been found in Dutch. The paper concentrates on morphology and linguistic change.
