Abstract
This paper discusses three desiderata for the study of the diachrony of Afrikaans. It is argued that more attention should be payed to the tenacity of Dutch variants in the face of new Afrikaans variants. Furthermore it is argued that that it may be worthwile to reopen the discussion about the identification of a possibly South Hollandic founder dialect. And finally it is argued that a further breakdown of the figures of the Cape colonial slave trade may yield new information about possible substrate languages beyond the traditional triple Khoekhoe, Asian Creole Portuguese and Pasar (or Bazaar) Malay.
