Abstract The article presents a literary criticism of the book "El Zarco" by Ignacio Manuel Altamirano. The focus of the study is to analyze the use of vegetation as a metaphor in romance literature and discusses its symbolism in relation to the central themes of the novel, namely, models of femininity and masculinity, questions on race, and nationalism.
