Abstract The data contained in a typological database are difficult or impossible to use on their own. Sustainability must include not only preservation of the data, but also of the interface designed to present them—or a reasonable substitute. The Typological Database System project (TDS), which originated as a way to address issues of fragmentation and interoperability of typological databases, also points the way to a model of sustainability beyond the lifetime of a database’s host application.
