Abstract
The article presents an overview of the 20 kernel instances of the Greek pluperfect in the Gospels with the corresponding forms in various Slavic translations of these texts. It is apparent that in modern translations the differences between the languages are considerable, varying from the frequent use of the pluperfect in Bulgarian and UpperSorbian via a rather moderate use in Macedonian, Serbian and Croatian, a low frequency in Slovene, Ukranian and Belorussian to a total lack of that form in modern Polish, Czech, Slovak and Russian. These scores are comparable with the distribution of the pluperfect found in Slavic translations of a number of modern narrative texts. One may conclude that the various existing translations of the Gospels - that are easily available on the Internet - provide very useful material for contrastive linguistic research.
